Yorkshire Dales Distillery was established by Tony Brotherton, a retired British Army officer, and his wife, Sarah as a family business producing some exceptional spirits using ingredients sourced from North Yorkshire including grain and water.
Purple Ram London Dry Gin and Smokey Ram Yorkshire Vodka were launched in early 2017 with Desert Ram Army Strength London Dry Gin being launched that Summer.
Purple Ram is produced in batches of up to 50 bottles and is flavoured entirely through vapour infusion. The blend of botanicals produces a distinctive fragrance reflected in a relatively sweet flavour with a single source of bitter citrus. A combination of the use of a reflux column, the volatile oils in the botanicals and the local water (which is sourced from the Swale Valley near Richmond and which is used for every aspect of production) delivers an exceptionally smooth liquid that many enjoy neat.
Smokey Ram is produced using the same method and is infused through hay smoked black peppercorns prepared at the Distillery. The smoke and pepper flavours are delicate but crucially the oils deliver a smooth quality similar to that of Purple Ram.
Desert Ram brings flavours of the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East. Despite being bottled at 50% abv it is also beautifully smooth.
Early response to the launch of the products has been very positive with a particular enthusiasm for the smooth flavours and the policy of creating, developing, distilling and bottling in house. The Distillery supplies direct to a large number of bars, restaurants, hotels and pubs across the United Kingdom and the spirits are due to take pride of place in the soon to be remodelled bar at The Leeds Met Hotel. A number of supply arrangements are in place with local, regional and national wholesalers in the United Kingdom and the spirits are retailed nationally by Gin Festival. The Distillery runs an eCommerce website that will soon support international sales.
